Experts from Trinity College Dublin Delivers Lecture at Thapar University

By 121 News

Chandigarh 30th April:- Thapar University, Patiala hosted a lecture on Irish and Indian history by a global expert from Trinity College Dublin at the university campus today. This comes just a few months after Thapar University's contemporisation agreement with the Dublin-based College. A key feature of the agreement relates to faculty exchange programmes.

Professor Jane Ohlmeyer, a globally renowned scholar of early modern Irish history, delivered a rare talk on the theme ''Ireland, India and the British empire''. She drew a parallel between the Irish and Indian freedom movements, offering a rather uncommon insight into a facet of history not well known in India. The professor elaborated on how Ireland was often the policy laboratory from where policies were imported by the erstwhile British Raj and foisted on pre-independence India. A visiting professor of history at Jawaharlal Nehru University, the widely respected Prof Ohlmeyer has also founded the School of Histories and Humanities at Trinity College Dublin.

Thapar University Director Prof Prakash Gopalan said that as part of this roadmap to benchmark Thapar University with global standards, an exercise of internal overhaul of all our processes is underway, ranging from pedagogy to research and faculty to curriculum. We are aligning with the Trinity way of teaching with more emphasis on research-inspired teaching than classroom instruction. We have already moved away from a content-based education system to an outcome-based one.
